i created a student role. However when i want to create a user i don't find the student role enlisted in the roles to choose.

Are you sure you've created the role without any error ? Can you explain exactly what steps you've made to do this ? And, maybe, can you go to "/admin/reports/dblog" and check if there is an error regarding your problem ?
