Offline document management

I would like to set up courses and lessons on the system but not release them to the training catalogue until the entire course has been completed. I at first assumed that this was the purpose of the ‘publish’ /’not publish’ toggle, but that causes the content to disappear permanently when unpublished (for example, lessons) in administrator. Is there any way to hide incomplete content from users other than the creator? thanks Ross
