Courses and Classes

Hi, My immediate supervisor raised this matter to me, regarding the Course Catalogue: 1) According to him, he sees the course catalogue with the list of courses he isn't a member of. 2) When he scrolls down, he sees this sorting: Unsorted Courses -- Course 1 -- Course 2 Class -- Course 1 -- Course 2 According to him, the second listing is confusing, because, courses are supposed to be groups of classes one can take. Thus, he said it's supposed to be the following: Course Category -> Course -> Class -> Lessons Is there a way to change the behaviour of a node, in order to reflect this? Many thanks in advance.

Hi Xtrobe,

Hi Xtrobe, The course catalogue is the section where you can search for a course and subscribe to it. That's consequently normal to see the courses you are not member of. To see only the courses you are member of you should look at the section "My courses" As for your second point, a class can contain courses, and not the contrary. A class has to be seen as a training path. If you want to change it you will have to change the names of content types, but also adapt every occurence inside the source code. If you have a better proposal in terms of terminology for classes (to be understood as a training path, containing courses) feel free to propose it, and we would change it for future releases. You are not the first one to be confused with classes/courses, but it's difficult to find something better. Best regards,

Thank you for the reply, Axel

Thank you for the reply, Axel. We're taking it from the perspective of the academic environment, wherein the course is basically the training path, and then the classes would serve as a collective of people taking that path. So, one course may have multiple classes, but each class member or class may take a collection of courses. I guess the confusion arises, because people here are used to this idea that the course takes precedence over the class. Hopefully, it would be possible to display this association, especially for our case. For now, is it possible to switch this arrangement from the catalogue?

Hi Xtrobe, what do you want

Hi Xtrobe, what do you want switch in the catalogue? Display all the classes courses even if you are already part of it? Best regards

Hi James,

Hi James, What we're looking at is bascially showing the courses, then showing the classes underneath. Thus: Course 1 |_ Class 1 |_ Class 2 |_ Class 3 What I'm currently seeing right now is the other way around: Class 1 |_ Course 1 |_ Course 2 |_ Course 3

Opigno Class Structure

Hi Xtrobe, In Opigno, it's a little confusing because in school a class is something you go to (I'm going to my "class" in the classroom".) Or Class is also used in the place of the word "course". (i.e. I'm going to take an English class). However, in Opigno, "Class" is used as a "CLASSification" in place of "area of study". It took me a while to understand this. So, in Opigno, the structure is like this: A - CLASSification: Science 1.) Course: Earth Science, 2.) Course: Biology B - CLASSification: Language Arts 3.) Couse: Reading, 4.) Course: Spelling Best Wishes, Stephen

Hi Xtrobe,

Hi Xtrobe, The course catalogue is just a view. For this view i suggest you start by getting all the courses and the join them with the classes and group by course. Best regards

Hi StephenW,

Hi StephenW, Thank you for your explanation. I hope I could wrap my head around this paradigm, and distribute this properly to my teams. Hi James, Taking StephenW's explanation about the class and courses, I'm adding another concern regarding these sections, particularly about the users. Considering the Class is the major element here, with the courses as its sub-elements, I would assume that the pool of users for the class would come from the overall pool of users from the system itself. Now, if a class has courses, the selection of users for each course should be from the selection of users from its mother class. Currently, I can still add people from the pool of users, even if they were not select for the class. I'm not sure if this is how one is to select students for a course, because, if the users from the system can easily be added, there is no distinction anymore between a class and a course. May I ask how this supposed is to go? Thanks!

Hi Xtrobe,

Hi Xtrobe,

Opigno is very flexible regarding this. Users can subscribe to both class or course.

But if you want, you put the courses as private, this way they will not be able to subscribe to the courses.

Both classes and courses are groups, but they are very distinct. The classes do not have any content associated to them, only courses.

If you only want the users from the classes inside the courses, you do not have to add any users to the course. The system has a rule that when you add a user to a class, or a course to a class, it makes sure all the users in the class are added to the course. This is only triggered downwards. From class to course, and not from course to class. Of course you can still remove/add specific users from courses. Everything is possible in that respect.

Best regards

Thanks for the explanation,

Thanks for the explanation, James. I'll review this again. Cheers!
