Slideshow -theming - subtheme, separate theme?

HI there, - 2.4 installed - Platon theme I want to have a front/public page that includes a rotating slideshow that links to pages within (course catalog, forum, etc.) I've tried the slideshow for nonpublic users, but I'm looking at slick carousel or the views slideshow. https://www.drupal.org/project/slick Can I do this without creating a new theme using a slideshow module or should I actually create a subtheme? If so, do I follow Drupal 8 instructions for subtheme? Or would it be better to create a new theme built off of platon? Thanks. Robin
